The province’s four main political party leaders will debate Northern issues in North Bay

The leaders of the four main provincial political parties will be in North Bay May 10 to debate issues relevant to Northern Ontarians.

The Northern Leaders Debate will be held at the Capitol Centre at 1:15 p.m. as part of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities 2022 annual Northeastern Municipal Conference.

The debate coincides with the conference taking place May 9 to 11. The City of North Bay is this year’s host.

The Northern Leaders Debate will feature Premier Doug Ford representing the Ontario Progressive Conservatives, Steven Del Duca, leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and Ontario Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner.

It’s unclear whether guests will be able to ask questions or what the debate format will look like. It’s also unknown what topics will be asked of the candidates.

“Many of 154 communities in the north have a small population, and the debate provides a platform for our voices to be heard,” FONOM president Danny Whalen said in a news release.

“We are pleased that the municipal organizations in Northern Ontario will hear directly from the provincial party leaders during the spring campaign.”

The provincial election takes place June 2.

The FONOM conference also includes a variety of speakers and tours. On May 9 the agenda includes a tour of Ontario Northland and an evening reception at Cascades Casino. Indigenous speaker George Couchie and Michael Borrelli who will speak on nuclear waste management.

The agenda for May 10 includes speakers Dr. Sarita Verma from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and ONTC CEO Corina Moore.

On May 11 the shortened agenda includes a guest who will address homelessness, mental health and addictions. The speaker wasn’t revealed in the schedule. FedNor’s director of programs Lucie Perreault will also address municipal representatives.
