Orchestra North is returning to Owen Sound.
The summer strings festival made up of workshops, lessons and performances will run from July 11 to 15 in downtown Owen Sound.
Among the instructors providing their insight during the event are Artistic Director Sebastian Ostertag, rock violinist Victoria Yeh, fiddler Tyler Beckett, storyteller, filmmaker and regalia designer Sharon Isaac, members of the Interro String Quartet, and cellist and pedagogue Sarah Steeves.
“It is so exciting to welcome our Orchestra North family back to downtown Owen Sound or a week of collaboration, learning, performing, and of course fun,” Ostertag said in a news release. “Our incredible faculty are dedicated to sharing their diverse artistry with this summer’s participants, whether it is refining the great classical works of the last 300 years, working on new pop song arrangements with Victoria Yeh, creating soundscaping stories with Sharon Isaac from Saugeen First Nation or fiddling up a storm with Tyler Beckett, there is such an amazing opportunity for participants of all ages and abilities.”
The festival offers programs for every level of musician, from half-day beginner strings to full-day intermediate and senior strings programs.
Along with its program, the festival provides scholarships for the Grey County Kiwanis Festival of Music and bursaries to musicians who attend the program. Those interested in scholarships and bursaries are asked to contact the festival directly through its website at orchestranorth.com
Throughout the week the public is invited to attend the Orchestra North concerts and events, including a faculty concert at the Noon Hour Series at Georgian Shores United Church on July 11 at noon, and the festival finale during the Music at the Market Series at the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market on July 15 at noon. Both events are free by donation.
The festival’s programs are supported by Community Foundation Grey-Bruce, Ontario Arts Council, Harmony Centre, Georgian Bay Symphony and the SweetWater Music Festival.
Anyone interested in participating in the festival can register by July 7 at www.orchestranorth.com/owensound and contact Ostertag at Sebastian@orchestranorth.com.
