The washroom had only been open for larger events such as Summerfolk in recent years, since the Good Cheer Washroom and Change Room was built, said Pam Coulter, Owen Sound’s director of community services.

The washrooms building was constructed entirely within the hazard area associated with the shoreline, she said, noting “in the last few years, when the water levels were high, the building was surrounded by water.

“In addition, the washroom building was not accessible, the floor slab had shifted and there were ongoing issues with the sanitary service.”

The city hired Roy-Mar Demolition to take the building down.

Coulter said her department plans to look at whether a second washroom is needed in the park, and where it would best be located, as part of an overall park master plan update.
