The miniature golf, paddle boat and canoe rental business has been operated by Chase, Roger and Cathy Amyot for years. The new 10-year agreement follows the their previous five-year agreements, a March 16 report to the city’s community services committee said.

The city accepted their proposal to undertake about $47,000 worth of renovations over the coming 10 years in return for a 10-year agreement which caps their lease payments at $8,435 annually, plus property tax.

Renovations this year will include recarpeting one-third of the greens, electrical upgrades and lighting replacements, rebuilding/refurbishing the lighthouse at Hole 11 and repairing the clock at Hole 5, where there are rotten posts.

Bricks will be replaced as required from hole to hole, the canoe dock will be rebuilt, flower boxes will be replaced at Hole 1, Hole 16 will get a new obstacle, and a new Putt n Paddle sign on the shed will be installed this year.

The full slate of improvements is listed in a schedule to the agreement, which lets the Amyots operate the city facility between May and Thanksgiving annually.

“The Amyots have been an excellent operator of this facility for the city and have a very good working relationship with parks staff as well as staff at city hall,” the report said.

“City staff is not aware of any complaints from the public regarding the operation of the facility. The facility is operated in accordance with the agreement and creates little demand on city resources with respect to the ongoing operation.”

They’re responsible for carrying $5 million worth of insurance, which indemnifies the city, among a list of other obligations.

Council forgave their rent owing in 2020 because the facility did not operate due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, council extended the agreement by one year and reduced the rent again, accepting $3,717.27 in rent and property tax as payment in full.
