Giant tunnel-boring machines arrive at Eglinton Crosstown West Extension launch site

The first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) part – a front shield – is lowered into its tunnel launch shaft this month. The parts are being lowered into the shaft by crane and then assembled before the two TBMs begin to dig the twin tunnels for the Eglinton West Crosstown Extension.

Construction crews recently lowered the first part of the gigantic German tunnel-boring machine — the front shield — into the tunnel launch shaft at Renforth Drive and Commerce Boulevard in Mississauga at the Etobicoke border.
