Correctional Service Canada reported Friday afternoon that four inmates at the maximum-security Millhaven Institution have tested positive for COVID-19.

The disclosure comes a day after CSC released statistics indicating that offenders serving time in maximum-security institutions, both nationally and at local institutions, were less likely to be fully vaccinated from COVID-19.

At Millhaven Institution, only 32.2 per cent of maximum-security inmates are fully vaccinated.

“COVID-19 testing is being offered to inmates and staff,” a release from CSC said.

“This is an evolving situation and we continue to apply and reinforce infection prevention and control measures to prevent and contain the spread of COVID-19, and adapt based on public health advice. All inmates are provided medical masks and are encouraged to wear them at all times when not in their cells. Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting throughout the site is continuing.”

CSC has been vaccinating inmates since January of last year.

All offenders, including new admissions to CSC are being offered the vaccination at all institutions. As part of the ongoing vaccination process, a third dose, or booster, is also being offered, the release said.
